“Norfolk Republic” by Clayton Singleton

Norfolk Republic by Clayton Singleton

From Ward’s Corner to Ocean View to the Park Place neighborhood in Norfolk, VA, local artist Clayton Singleton has resided in and experienced a massive transformation from the 1970’s to the 21st century. With a belief that our integrated continuum is worthy of exploration and celebration, Singleton created Norfolk Republic, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, mixed media and videos portraying Norfolk citizens in their individual communities. Collaged backgrounds from photographs of times gone by coincide with actual resident addresses creating a perceptually enriched experience.

Singleton strives to bring focus to the human will and ability we each possess to create our own unique individual stories and outcomes. Through academic freestyle, his artworks mirror the addition, subtraction, leaving and retrieving of emotional processes choreographed by contemporary society.

Clayton holds a BA in art from Virginia Wesleyan University and an M.Ed. from Regent University. An art educator for over 25 years, he has been a keynote speaker at conferences and symposiums nationwide and was recognized as teacher of the year on four occasions. In 2020, VEER magazine selected Singleton as Mural Artist of the Year. Clayton has exhibited across the region to include the Sandler Center, Peninsula Fine Arts Center, James Wise Gallery at Norfolk State, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center and more. Singleton previously served on the Board of Directors for the d’Art Center and the Norfolk Commission for the Arts and Humanities and is currently a member of the Chrysler Museum of Art Education Committee.
