A call to local artists resulted in a pre-qualified artist pool of individuals being identified who were offered an opportunity to submit ideas for a variety of projects being planned for several locations throughout the new St. Pau’s Transformation Project over the next few years.
Specifically, several mural artists submitted to be a part of this list. A retaining wall on Church St. measuring 200 feet long and 3 feet high, consisting of 31 panels was identified as the perfect location for a mosaic mural. Artist Poetry Jackson was selected to create the mural design.
Poetry is working with a fabricator to translate her design into a mosaic mural by carefully selecting appropriate tile material and colors.
Poetry’s design foster’s cultural identity, pride, and connection, enriching the community through artistic engagement and placemaking. The mosaic is envisioned with a palette of blues, golds, purples, greens and natural tones with warm inspired hues that reflect the stories, landscape and cultural richness of the St. Paul’s community. The existing wall cap is anticipated to remain a durable non-mosaic surface designed to accommodate every-day use while minimizing maintenance requirements.
“This is not a full-coverage mural – it’s a selective mosaic system. Instead of covering the entire wall, I designed a negative space and wave that connects key moments. Images represent faith and heritage, grounding the community’s story in its rich past and illustrating the foundational beliefs that inspire unity and resilience. The overall design captures the joy and connection of the neighborhood, showcasing vibrant interactions and shared experiences that strengthen community ties across generations and cultures. Additional design highlights include nature and growth, and depict local flora and fauna, emphasizing a commitment to sustainability, while celebrating the beauty of the environment surrounding them. Incorporating shared memories, such as playing in flooded waters and roller skating behind cars, will truly evoke a sense of home and rekindle cherished recollections.”
Jackson will be working with a Virginia licensed contractor to complete all labor, and secure necessary equipment, tools and materials to include:
Cutting and laying of the tiles according to her design.
Preparing the wall and priming if necessary.
Transferring the tiles and adhering in place.
Grouting and sealing all tilework.
A two-year warranty of craftsmanship of artwork and installation.
