As I reflect on womanhood, justice, and integrity in this country, I’m reminded that the fight for equality is long and arduous. I celebrate the triumphs of women working within our legal system, but I also yearn for a fundamental transformation of these systems to safeguard our most vulnerable members, women of color.
Those who are most harmed by these systems often bear the weight of challenging and changing them. I honor the histories and sacrifices of those who have fought tirelessly for marginalized voices to be heard, valued, and considered. Through my work, combining cast clay and fibers, I pay homage to the burden and vulnerability of the work women take on. A red hand symbolizes the lives of countless women of color whose ghosts long for representation. A lingering presence, a weight that persists.
