I DISSENT
2026 = Paper, acrylic paint
Ruth Bader Ginsburg had one collar that she preferred to wear while reading the dissenting opinion for the court. I recreated my interpretation of the collar using paper from the book, In Defense of Justice, which explained the greatest of her dissents in terminology for the non-lawyer. While working on the artwork, I was reminded of many lawsuits that have had a terrible impact on the lives of individuals as well as the health of our nation..
SHOES TO FILL
2026 = Paper
This artwork is part of a series I’ve been creating, relating to women’s shoes. For this piece, I began with the search term, “RBG shoes” to see what styles she wore. Imagine my surprise to see photos of her rocking a pair of glittery pumps at the Woman of Leadership award ceremony in 2020. At age 87, she still had that pizazz! Instagram went crazy over it according to the article on the NY Post website. I am generally annoyed when attention is given to women’s clothing vs the woman herself. In this case, however, I saw RBG’s shoes as a symbol of her boldness and fortitude. She was undeterred by sexism throughout her career. For the artwork, I suggested the sparkle through the use of circles with text oriented in all directions on the upper of these “sensible,” lawyerly pumps.
