2024 Offsite Gallery solo exhibition May 17 – July 12
“Roses are Red, My Braids are Black”
Bria Tyler is a Virginia-based artist who draws inspiration from Victorian influence and Black culture in her multidisciplinary works. This exhibition showcases the beauty and diversity of black hair, celebrating it as an expression of self-love through a luxury experience. Tyler’s works show her respect and appreciation of black hair as an art form while also expressing her experiences of identity, culture, and self-acceptance.

Bria Tyler’s work is a reminder that art can be a powerful tool for change and that beauty can be found in even the most unexpected places. Tyler’s work is deeply rooted in her personal experiences and the experiences of those around her. As a black woman, Tyler has had to navigate through a society that often does not understand the importance of black hair and its cultural significance. This experience has inspired her to create art that not only celebrates black hair but also educates others about its importance, through paintings and 3D works.

Tyler’s work has been displayed in galleries and exhibitions across the country, mainly in the Hampton Roads area. Tyler’s art is a reminder that black hair is not just hair; it is a symbol of culture, identity, and history. Her work is a celebration of black beauty and a call to action for society to recognize the importance of black hair, as she uses real braiding hair and items one could find within a beauty supply targeted towards African Americans.

In addition to her artwork, Tyler is also involved in the community. She has worked at Virginia MOCA and the Chrysler Museum as a teaching artist for the past two years. Tyler will receive her BFA in art education from Old Dominion University in 2024.
