“My work explores the profound connection between Black identity and the natural world, reimagining how we see ourselves through nature’s lens. In my art, I transform Black figures into living botanical forms, celebrating the inherent beauty and life force that flows through both human beings and the plant kingdom.

By depicting Black people as plants, I invite viewers to witness us as nature sees us, as God made us – integral parts of the earth’s magnificent tapestry. Our rich skin tones mirror the diverse palette of life found in nature: the deep browns of fertile soil, the warm amber of tree bark, the vibrant greens of thriving leaves. These are not merely aesthetic choices, but spiritual connections that speak to our fundamental unity with the natural world.

The flowers that bloom from hair in my work represent growth, beauty, and the flowering of Black identity. They symbolize how we, like plants, are designed to flourish and bring beauty into the world. Through this botanical transformation, I challenge viewers to see Black bodies not as separate from nature, but as expressions of its divine creativity.

My art seeks to reclaim and celebrate our place in the natural order rooted, growing, blooming, and essential to the ecosystem of humanity. In seeing ourselves as nature sees us, we remember our inherent worth and our sacred connection to all living things.”
