I Dissent
2024 = Bead embroidered jewelry
RBG was known for her assortment of collars, with most of them coming to have a special meaning or purpose over time. The collar this piece pays homage to, her “Dissent Collar,” as it came to be known, was gifted to RBG in a swag bag at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in 2012 and was created by Banana Republic.
When asked why she chose this particular collar for when presenting dissents, she told Katie Couric that the necklace seemed like it was perfect for dissents. I couldn’t agree more. The collar was donated to The Smithsonian along with some other items by her family in 2022.
Unraveling Opinions
2026 = Mixed media fiber
RBG was a defender of women’s rights and LGBT rights. Reading her opinions and knowing what is happening in our country in 2026 made me visualize her words slowly losing their shape, like threads being pulled from a tapestry. These are the quotes from her opinions included:
“A woman’s right to choose an abortion is something central to a woman’s life, to her dignity… And when government controls that decision for her, she’s being treated as less than a full adult human being responsible for her own choices.”
“Throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.”
“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”
