“This artwork offers a welcoming experience by combining local historic and contemporary themes. The sculptures reference the close-knit cultural community of Tidewater Gardens and add site specific nods to surrounding architecture and natural ecosystems. Through this work the new Kindred identity is further defined, and the character of the neighborhood is enhanced.
My aim is to transform the gateway experience with a monumental and technological sculpture that draws attention to the new development. By highlighting cultural, architectural and environmental roots tied to the area, my aim is to bring a new modern relevance to the origins of Tidewater Gardens.
Freestanding, illuminated artworks create a destination that visitors can gather around and drive through, encouraging distinct day and nighttime variations. The organic form serves to soften the new architecture, introduce tactility, and create rhythm, scale and approachability. It weaves together the story of new urban culture and historic ecological and cultural systems.
Passage: Sight lines and circulation are emphasized, inviting guests coming from various directions to pass through the artwork and be surrounded by it. The artwork’s primary function is to celebrate new development and give cultural significance to its past. My aim is to engage visitors through this legacy artwork feature, as well as offer a changing visual perspective from various vantage points.
During the day public interest will be placed on the curvilinear forms and frosted polycarbonate arrays. In the evening hours, the artwork will illuminate with animated lighting patterns, enlivening the sculpture and drawing visitors to the plaza.
I believe this concept offers a new way to live with art – a way in which art enriches the fan base experience and creates an atmosphere of participation, curiosity, and connection.
Community Engagement:
I welcome the opportunity for community engagement, finding that it enhances both the process and end product. I created a public engagement platform to collect text used in the artwork on June 20th at the historic Attucks Theatre. By engaging with the community through hands-on activities, it is hoped that the community feels connected to the sculpture and understands their contribution.
