Mensah Bey is a native of Richmond, VA. He received his BA in Graphic Design from Hampton University and MFA in Visual Studies from Norfolk State University. His paintings explore a surrealistic abstract world referenced by the digital age through the application of hard-edged, geometric patterning. Inspired by contemporary artists such as Sandra Chevrier and Jean-Pierre Roy, Mensah creates vibrant humanoid Afrocentric abstractions.
Transparent layering established through color theory and analysis sets a tone that deconstructs painting techniques, making visible the process of applying layers.
Mensah renders elongated necks reminiscent of some African cultures in his Adjent series. The symbolism bridges the connections between the physical and virtual world. Ajent’s capture unique qualities and reveal elements of their personality.
