Vanessa McKinnon is a Virginia-based multidisciplinary artist whose work spans across mixed media drawing, acrylic painting, and digital design, her work explores identity, memory, and lived experience through vibrant color, texture, and layered storytelling. She creates symbolic, experimental compositions that invite viewers to engage in self-reflection while considering cultural presence and real-world complexity. Her motivation stems from translating internal experiences into visual form.
McKinnon’s passion for art developed early from childhood, and her curiosity grew once she took art more seriously in high school. While shaping her craft, she decided that she wanted to make art anddesign her full career and continue to study it. She is a current BFA student at Norfolk State University. Since attending college, she had expanded her creative voice and been influenced by her peers and mentors while keeping Dean’s List recognition. Her work has been shown throughout the Hampton Roads area, including the Westminster Canterbury and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.
Inspired by mentors and artists such as Ralph Irby, Kehinde Wiley, and Charles Dawson, McKinnon aims to tell impactful stories that resonate with audiences. She wants to pursue a future in design for advertising and marketing while continuing to exhibit her work.
