“I am my own biggest voyeur and my self portraiture allows you to be my voyeur too. I am a conceptual self portrait photographer who focuses on beauty, black womanhood, and emotional vulnerability. Being both black and a woman is a double bind in America, and my work transforms this catch 22 from an unspoken taboo, to a means of self-expression and freedom.

My first experience with photography was a childhood photo album my mother had gifted me after my parents divorced. Growing up as the middle child of 4, I felt very invisible at times and had this insatiable drive to turn myself into whoever was required, just to get a morsel of attention. That photo album was a vast collection of moments over several years of my childhood that my mom had been collecting, unbeknownst to me. It ranged from memories of first words, to pictures of my first day at school. Receiving this book was the first time I felt seen and truly acknowledged as a human being by my mother. I got to witness myself through the eyes of my mom. Now, I do self-portraits to see myself through my own.

As Americans, we live in a hypersexualized, individualist, surveillance state. The masses crave not only physical, but also visual seduction. The only appropriate medium to generate a parasocial intimacy with viewers is photography. I use makeup and thrifted clothes to turn myself into different characters that represent the myriad of facets of my femininity, sexuality, and emotions. I want the ugly parts of womanhood to be ironically provocative. I mash my internal struggles through the grinder of the male gaze to create a commentary on contemporary beauty standards, and to connect with those who feel their own struggles are insurmountable.”
