Jackie Merritt is a Hampton, VA based African American visual artist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. In these creative worlds (art/music), she is considered by many a Renaissance Woman.
In the Hampton Roads area, Jackie has taught painting and drawing at Norfolk State University (then, Norfolk State College), Virginia Commonwealth University, and Thomas Nelson Community College. She also taught at the University of Wisconsin in graduate and undergraduate studies for several years. For twenty years, Jackie was a Visual Information Specialist for the Navy.
In 2010, she received the Alli Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Cultural Life of Greater Hampton Roads. In 2015, one of her original songs was featured on the internationally acclaimed CD, Blues Harp Women that celebrated only female harmonica players. It was produced by Ruf Records, out of Germany. Jackie was also accepted into the Library of Congress “AMERICANA WOMEN”- Roots Musicians – Women’s Tales and Tunes, as part of the MusicBox Project collection.
In 1971, Jackie had the honor of spending the summer with Georgia O’Keeffe in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
Merritt received a BFA in Art Education from Norfolk State University, and an MA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
