Maizelle Brown curated several Offsite Gallery and Selden Gallery exhibitions for Norfolk Arts. She was a founding member of the Norfolk Public Art Commission and served 3 terms ending in 2018. Her work has been exhibited at the Chrysler Museum of Art and is included in many private and corporate collections to include the Norfolk Botanical Garden. A former Norfolk gallery owner she will always be remembered by many artists for helping to get their careers started. Maizelle was always willing to share her knowledge and expertise and was a dear friend to many. She always dreamed of a visit to the motherland, Africa.
Maizelle was a VA native and a founding member or SEVAA. She was a prize winning artist for over 40 years. She owned 2 art galleries: The Art Cellar and Maizelle Gallery of Art. She worked over 20 years in the Art Therapy Activities Program and received numerous awards and recognition from the Attuck’s Theatre and Business Women of Color. Maizelle was the founder of the Artists’ Lecture Series at the Chrysler Museum. Maizelle received a Key to the City of Portsmouth and was a recipient of the 2003 YWCA Women of Distinction award.
