Life Drawing: Phoenix Rising, is one of 5 natural stone mosaics being created for 5 schools in Norfolk, VA by Mark Archambault of Hammerhead Stoneworks in Asheville, NC. The mosaics speak to the idea of students making things; not just the life that they see, but drawing the life they want for themselves. Mark met with students earlier in the year to gather ideas. Several varieties of marble from India, Emperador Dark Marble from Spain and Etowah Pink Marble, a salmon pink metamorphic rock with rose-pink, grey and white rose color waves found in Tate, Georgia are just some of the unique stones Mark chose for Life Drawing: Phoenix Rising.
The mosaic was recognized by the Society of American Mosaic Artists during their 2019 juried exhibition Mosaic Arts International: Architectural & Site-Specific category. It is 9.75 ft. tall and 17.5 ft. wide.
