Join Norfolk Arts grantee The Norfolk Chamber Consort as they kick-off their 55th Season!
Their season opens at Chandler Recital Hall – Diehn Center for Performing Arts at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia with a program called “Pop” dedicated to Haydn, a pivotal figure between the Baroque and Classical Periods. The program will trace the transformation of the composer’s style that prepared the emergence of figures like Mozart and Beethoven, among others.
The next program will take place in December, with a distinguished baritone Rod Gilfry performing a program entitled “Poulenc and Prince Igor,” the latter being the incredibly influential Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. This concert, exploring the interconnection between these two distinguished personalities, is the last of the programs that were intended for performance during the 2021/2022 season but were canceled due to the pandemic.
The third program will be entitled “Sour Cream.” That is the exact translation from the Czech language of the word “smetana.” It will be dedicated to the distinguished and somewhat underappreciated Czech composer Bedřich Smetana and the composers he interacted with, was influenced by, and who influenced Smetana himself. 2024 marks the 130th anniversary of Smetana’s passing.
Finally, the season will conclude in March 2024 with a 55th-anniversary celebration program that will include the highlights from the previous five years.
