As part of the St. Paul’s public art initiative, one of our commissioned artists, Chris Fennell has opened his studio and his process to two emerging local talents — Andre Jacob, a Norfolk State University art student, and Cameron Jacob, who studies at Tidewater Community College. Both young artists have been hired to assist, learn, and collaborate as the large scale artwork for the St. Paul’s transformation takes shape.
This mentorship is doing more than supporting the creation of a major public artwork. It’s giving two rising artists hands on experience in designing, fabricating, and installing work at a professional scale — the kind of opportunity that builds real portfolios and real careers. Their voices and perspectives are becoming part of the creative vision, ensuring the artwork reflects the community it’s being created for.
It’s a powerful example of how public art can invest in people as much as place, creating pathways for local artists while bringing new energy and authenticity to the project.
The students recently explored the landfill for scrap metal to use to create public art.
